What is packrafting?
Packrafting is a paddling sport in which you explore local waterways and surrounding nature reserves in a lightweight inflatable boat. Thanks to the unique properties of a packraft, unlike a canoe or kayak, you can easily take it with you on hiking or cycling trips. This distinctive advantage is also the reason why the packraft was invented.
Alaska is considered the birthplace of packrafting. There, the need arose for a robust, lightweight vessel that could be easily carried on long expeditions through rough terrain. The indomitable spirit of adventure that characterises the region helped stimulate the development of the packraft.

A young sport with deep roots!
It is not entirely clear when the first packrafts appeared. Luc Mehl's The Packraft Handbook mentions concepts from the 19th century, including a long coat with an inflatable section incorporated into the fabric. However, it remains doubtful whether such a design ever actually made it onto the water.
The modern packraft is linked to the Alpacka Raft brand, which developed the first prototypes around the year 2000 using contemporary materials and techniques. Packrafting is therefore still a relatively young sport. In recent years, more and more developers have started working with lightweight materials, and various brands have emerged worldwide, such as MRS (China) and Mekong (France). Although the basic concept remains the same, each brand has its own vision on materials, design and applications.
The popularity of packrafting continues to grow, and it certainly deserves a place among other paddle sports. However, for the time being, it remains primarily recreational, which is precisely what makes it so appealing.

A special inflatable boat
An inflated packraft is a remarkably spacious vessel. You wouldn't know it when it's empty and rolled up in your backpack. When inflated, the boat gains volume and shape, and with the air in the tubes, it also gains the necessary buoyancy. The packraft lies wide on the water surface. The bottom, a simple plastic sheet, lies directly on the water, which ensures a limited draught.
Thanks to the shape of the boat, it is particularly stable. At least, until the tipping point is reached – then capsizing is usually inevitable. Nevertheless, thanks to its characteristics, the packraft remains ideal for adventure: it is easy to transport in a backpack, on a bicycle or by public transport. The possibilities are endless.
But packrafting is not about speed or distance. It is the perfect way to experience nature in an active and relaxed way. The comfortable seat, stable handling and gentle pace give you plenty of space to really take in your surroundings. A true immersion in nature.
